The first time I really met David was at a small men's retreat when we were both attending ECBF. We had been invited out to spend some time with some other dads from our church and we spent time at a cabin where we got to watch sports, eat good food, drink beer, and play cards. Somehow we ended up laying Spades which was a surprise because I didn't know anyone in Seattle who played Spades. David and I were on opposite teams and he and I were the only ones who had played it a lot in our past. We were a couple of games in when I caught him as he reneged on a suit. I almost didn't call it. I learned to play Spades when I was in the Army and I was totally caught off guard since we were a bunch of church guys at a church event. Needless to say, I had to go back and show him the book where he committed his little act of subversion. In the end, he fessed up and that was the beginning of a wonderful friendship while he lived in the Seattle area. David was so generous. On more than one occasion, he invited my family over for dinner and he was so kind and gentle with my boys. I will truly miss him for now, but I look forward to playing Spades with him on the other side of eternity. I miss you Brother.
